A ONCE OFF ONCE-IN-A-LIFETIME OPPORTUNITY!

Elephant population management is one of the most critical and potentially controversial conservation issues facing many areas in Africa. Wildlife managers are struggling with growing elephant populations and limited management options.

Since 2001 the Disney Animal Team has been working with conservationists and wildlife officials in South Africa with the goal of providing an elephant management tool that can be used to maintain biological diversity and reduce the need for culling. Surgical sterilization is a permanent contraceptive technique that is used around the world and is one of the most common methods of birth control in both animals and humans. A vasectomy is one method of surgical sterilization that has the advantage of maintaining normal hormone levels and thus breeding and social behaviours remain unchanged. Elephants that have been vasectomised will continue to go into musth, breed (although sterile) and maintain their social status within the population.

This safari assists this project as it moves across borders into Swaziland and into new reserves that are following this path of elephant management, while giving guests a once-in-a-lifetime hands on experience!

This safari affords clients the opportunity to be involved in multiple elephant immobilisation procedures and the subsequent surgeries. The time preceding and after the various immobilisation and surgical procedures allows time for traditional game drives and learning more about elephant in general, as well as preparing you for the immobilisation and procedures.

Guests are given the opportunity to get hands on with the elephant, once the patient is immobilised, and it is thus safe to move closer. Guests have the option of a hands-on approach, or, if they prefer, simply observing from up close and getting those pictures of a lifetime!

Guest participation covers some of the veterinary costs, which are very expensive and unattainable for the project without assistance.

So come join us for the experience of a lifetime and do something for elephant research and conservation!
