NEWSLETTER
NOVEMBER 2007
Not quite
as long as last time but admittedly still not quarterly... we’re
getting there...
We trust this finds you all well, wherever in the world you may
find yourself. It has been a busy winter for us but we are well
and back in the office for a few months catching up on the dreaded
paper work!! As always, the newsletter is to give you a brief
update on what has been happening and is planned at Brothers Safaris
so you can plan your next visit here accordingly, and know what
excitement and fun you are missing out on in the interim. We also
feature some great specials at the end of the
newsletter, so be sure to read to the end!
This year
we ran three AVS Wildlife Immobilisation & Conservation
Courses, which has been hard going for Peter not seeing
too much of William but all three courses were a great success
and the feedback that we have had from the students has been unbelievable,
and so it has all been worthwhile. We have three set departure
dates for 2008 for our standard course, one of which
is fully booked already, so hurry if you want to secure your spot!!
All details are on the website:
)
After many requests from the students this year, and in the past,
asking whether we would run an Advanced Course to build on what
they have already learnt on the Standard course, we have put together
a programme for 2008. The Advanced
Wildlife Immobilisation & Conservation Course
is intended to build on what students learnt in their first course
with us and goes into more depth on some topics, introduces new
topics and reviews others already covered. This course
is also aimed at, and suitable for, veterinarians.
The courses have been submitted to the South African Veterinary
Council and approved for continuing education/continuing professional
development by the council, reflecting the quality of
the course and tuition offered.
Our first
Veterinary Science in Wildlife Management & Conservation
Safari, ran in October for 7 days and the feedback that
we had from all the guests was incredible and we could not have
asked for anything more. What do you expect when you get to be
involved hands-on in the immobilisation of 3 black rhino
in one day!!
This safari
takes you ‘behind the scenes with wildlife’ from a
veterinary perspective but also includes traditional tourism and
game viewing activities and is far less technical than the Immobilisation
Courses, thus making the programme ideal for first time visitors
and non-vet partners too. For more information on 2008 departures,
use this link: http://www.brotherssafaris.com/veterinaryscience.htm
Other
exciting work with clients included three days at the
beginning of November filming with a French Film crew at Pongola
Nature Reserve. We immobilised a huge Tusker (big bull elephant
for those not in the know) for a tracking collar replacement before
its batteries ran flat. The weather did its best to hamper operations
but in the end all went well and the entire operation was a huge
success and not only secured funding for this vital task, but
also a R12 000 donation to the Space For Elephants Foundation
(SFEF) – please visit their website to learn what this organisation
does for elephant conservation: http://www.space4elephants.org
Our sincere thanks to Dr Heinz Kohrs (Veterinarian, owner of White
Elephant and founder member of SFEF) and the crew at White Elephant
Safari Lodge, as well as Mr Yann Bertrand from France whom we
were filming for and who generously made the donation.
Apart from
all our AVS departures Peter has also been busy with private wildlife
work too. Recently he spent 4 days in Angola on a Chimp
Rescue mission. One chimp actually – Josephine
a 17 year old that had been in captivity for most of her life.
Living in a metal crate her owners looked after her fairly well
under the circumstances (she had a clean cage with some ropes
and other climbing apparatus and she was quite well fed) but needless
to say this is no life for chimp - living in metal cage in the
middle of Luanda, Angola. Josephine has subsequently been relocated
to a chimp rehab sanctuary here in South Africa where she will
be integrated into a chimp troop and hopefully be released back
into the wild eventually. We plan to pay her a visit soon.
