Are you looking for a unique cycling experience that almost no one has done? Join our cycling tour through Madagascar’s most famous national park: Andasibe Mantadia National Park. Renowned for its exotic orchids, the park is also home to Madagascar’s endemic animals such as chameleons, tenrecs, and lemur species. Andasibe is also the only spot you can find the largest lemur, the Indri.
Itinerary
Day 1 – 3 : Grace Lodge OR Vakona Forest Lodge
Arrival in Antananarivo, the capital of Madagascar, where you will be met in the morning at the airport or at your hotel depending on required collection point. After a brief driving tour around Tana, we will drive to Andasibe through the green and luxuriant vegetation of the east. This first step brings us to the humid part of the country with many primary forests and lakes, and the landscape consists of rice fields, waterfalls, and scarce forest stations. Along the way we will see Merina villages in the Rocky Mountains.
Check-in to the hotel, and then at approximately 19h00 we enjoy a night walk within the Andasibe area to observe night active lemurs and other nocturnal animals.
Classic Accommodation at Grace Lodge or similar are bungalows with en-suite bathrooms and veranda. Superior Accommodation at Vakona Forest Lodge, Andasibe Hotel or similar are bungalows surrounded by the forest, with en-suite bathrooms, and veranda.
After breakfast on day 2, we take a morning visit to the Special Reserve of Andasibe where you will discover the many endemic species. In particular, your guide will search for the Indri, the largest lemurs on the island. This 810 ha reserve is unique with its endemic fauna and flora. It contains a wide variety of orchids, canopy, and endemic animals like chameleons, tenrecs, and many birds.
In the afternoon, you take a leisurely cycle to visit Lemur Island at Vakona Forest Lodge to meet the resident lemurs up close! Afterwards you will have the option to cycle back to your accommodation.
En-route you will see the local villages near the Andasibe Reserve and if you are lucky you might spot a chameleon next to the forest on your way back to the hotel. The rest of your afternoon is at leisure – why not take some time to relax by the pool, enjoy a horse ride, or visit the Private Park of Vakona (the horse-riding and visit to Private park are optional extras).
Day 3 : transit
After breakfast, we will have the option cycle back to Moramanga or to stay in our tour vehicle. The tour vehicle will follow the cyclists to Moramanga. Road conditions for the cyclists is on a good, straight tar road and you will see local villages with typical Bezanozano houses. As you cycle take a moment to enjoy the scenery and the landscape.
After Moramanga we head back with our touring vehicle to Tana, where your lemur experience comes to an end.
